Choosing a 510-Thread Battery in 2026
The 510 thread is the industry standard for cartridge batteries — it's the small screw connection between the cart and the battery. If your cartridge screws in, you're on 510. What differs between batteries is voltage control, preheat function, battery capacity, and build quality.
Fixed vs. variable voltage
Fixed-voltage batteries (usually 3.3V or 3.7V) are simpler and cheaper. Variable-voltage lets you dial in 2.4V-4.2V — lower for flavor, higher for bigger draws. Most quality oils are designed for 2.8V-3.6V, so a variable battery lets you match your cart's sweet spot.
Preheat mode
Preheat sends a low-voltage pulse for 5-10 seconds to warm thick cartridges before use. This is essential in cold weather or with high-viscosity oils — without preheat, thick oils burn the coil dry or produce weak draws. Any battery over $20 should have preheat.
USB-C is now standard
By 2026 most decent batteries have moved to USB-C charging. Micro-USB batteries still exist but they're older stock. USB-C charges 2-3× faster and doesn't wear the port out.
Capacity — real numbers
Battery capacity is measured in mAh. 350mAh (typical pen-style) gives you around 1-2 days of light use. 900-1100mAh (chunkier stealth or dab-pen style) gets 4-5 days. Anything advertising "10,000 mAh" is exaggerating — real capacity rarely exceeds 1500mAh in a pen-style form factor.
