Nevada has always been on the cutting edge of adult debauchery. Legalizing gambling in 1931 was certainly a controversial topic just after the Great Depression, however, probably no less shocking when the state legalized prostitution in 1971. No one even noticed when medical marijuana was approved in 2000, and likewise, it came as not great surprise, last November, when more than 54% of Nevada residents voted to legalize cannabis for recreational use.
There are a few things to know if you’re traveling to the Sin City in the near future and plan to partake in the cannabis festivities.
- Public consumption is NOT allowed. Despite the fact that you can carry a beer, hard liquor, or any other inebriating liquid containing alcohol everywhere you go in Vegas, consuming cannabis, medicinally or recreationally, must be done in a private residence. Although you may “think” your hotel is private, it is not, and most hotels don’t allow smoking of any kind as they are governed by the Federal Gaming Commission. The Wynn Resorts and Casino went as far as to ban Isaac Dietrich, the CEO of MassRoots because of his affiliation with cannabis. Obviously, discreetly consuming an edible before you head to the Zombie Burlesque is probably safe. Be aware, however, public consumption can result in a $600 fine, so discretion is priority.
- Do not drive under the influence of cannabis. Just as it is in any state, driving while under the influence of cannabis products is not advisable. Not only because it is illegal, but because you could put yourself or others at risk. You can have the legal amount of cannabis products with you in the vehicle, but just 2 nanograms of THC in your system could land you in jail, which isn’t the best way to spend your vacation. Remember, just because you no longer “feel high” doesn’t mean your body has completely metabolized the THC… you could still test over the limit even DAYS after consuming cannabis.
- Medical patients, bring your medical card! Nevada is one of the few states that recognizes medical marijuana designation from any state, as long as you have your medical card with you. You will be given priority in many dispensaries, pay fewer taxes, and get lower prices.Approved legal carry limits – you can purchase and carry up to 1 ounce of marijuana with you, or 3.5 grams of marijuana concentrates.
- Approved legal carry limits – you can purchase and carry up to 1 ounce of marijuana with you, or 3.5 grams of marijuana concentrates.
- Taxes – Current tax on marijuana products in Nevada for medical patients is 8.25%, however, when shopping recreationally be prepared to tack on another 10% for a total tax of 18.25% on your purchase.
